Self Hypnosis Techniques

While many prefer to go to a licensed therapist to learn the ins and outs of self hypnosis, there are some techniques anyone can try. Really nothing more than putting oneself into a state of deep relaxation, these self hypnosis techniques have proven effective for some to make positive changes in their lives.

Self hypnosis involves relaxing the body, calming the mind and opening it up for positive, nurturing thoughts. In a world where we often hear and see nothing but the negatives, self hypnosis can be very useful in boosting resolve, confidence and even self-esteem.

While it won't likely be easy to master self hypnosis right off the bat, it is possible for almost anyone to benefit from its principles. To start learning self hypnosis, a person needs to follow these steps:

  • Get comfortable. It can be virtually impossible to learn or practice self hypnosis unless you're in a comfortable position in a comfortable, quiet place. Locate an area where quite concentration and contemplation can be found. Whether it's a chair in the living room or a bed, it doesn't matter, as long as comfort has been found.

  • Clear you mind. This is a difficult part of self hypnosis for many, but it's important. Try to wipe the slate clean of all the little thoughts and constant nags that go alone with every day life.

  • Relax your body. Part of self hypnosis involves concentrating on individual body parts and literally feeling the tension and pressure release from them. Start at the head and work down, or vice versa. The important part of this self hypnosis step is to make sure the entire body is relaxed and comfortable at the end of it.

  • Don't forget to breathe. Part of self hypnosis involves taking slow, cleansing breaths. Deep breathing techniques are not only beneficial for self hypnosis, but also for meditation and simple relaxing.

  • Count down. With the body and mind completely at ease, count down from 10 and then recite what's on your mind. Whether it's a desire to be smoke free or do better at work, now's the time to suggest success. This self-hypnosis step shouldn't be cluttered with negative statements. Instead of "I won't smoke," say "I will be smoke free."

  • Count up. Once you've completed the self hypnosis exercise, it's time to head back to everyday life. Count up from 1 to 10.

Self hypnosis isn't for everyone and it won't always work, but the basic relaxation and calming techniques involved in the measure can be very soothing and beneficial. It can take a while to master the steps involved in self hypnosis, but with a little practice, almost anyone can take advantage of these techniques to improve their outlook on life.
